The Disk Space Shortage of 2006 was a data loss event involving the main system drive of the MASTER-EGG workstation running dangerously low on disk space and the immediate aftermath. The event occurred on or about November 13, 2006.
Beginning on or about October 4, 2006, the studio began a renewed focus on completing the Ni-Ki-Oh! Final Genesis DVDs, which involved the post-production of previously unreleased episodes. By October 30, 2006, some editing and animation for the episode Power Surge had been performed. Editing was fully completed for the episode Losing a Mind, with only some minor special effects and animation needed before the episode was ready for release. However, on October 30, the MASTER-EGG began experiencing incessant system errors, including failure to boot for several hours at a time. By changing various application settings, the workstation became usable again.
By November 11, Losing a Mind was fully completed and was able to be uploaded to YouTube.
However, by November 13, even though editing data was kept on separate storage disks, the system drive reported that it had completely run out of disk space, which prevented many critical system functions from working properly. Further changes to application settings did not free sufficient disk space, and the source of the disk usage could not be adequately determined.
The studio opted to reformat and reinstall the system drive.
Upon attempting to continue editing the incomplete episode Power Surge, however, editors learned that all existing special effects values were now no longer recognized, which meant that special effects work for the episode would need to be restarted from scratch. The same was also true for the special effects data for the episode Losing a Mind, but because the episode was already uploaded to YouTube, it was a considered less of a loss.
The studio spent several days trying to recover the data, or alternatively to formulate other means of reperforming the same work with lower time investment, until the event was mentioned in a news entry on November 24. While some work on Final Genesis did continue for a time, this event was a major contributor to the release of these episodes being indefinitely delayed.
