  2. Meeting #17

Meeting #17 was the club meeting that took place on Saturday, January 11, 2003, most likely in the living room of 35-D Edgewater Park. Its purpose was the Winter 2002-03 Presidential Election, and it may have ended with Theodore Phillips as the 8th president.

The Period

The golden age of Yu-Gi-Oh! tournaments was still the status quo, and in the Duel Monsters of Mayhem Mash Tournament, the monsters even came to life. Members also invented new games, such as "Sticks of Gum" and "Mega Dice Monsters," to satiate their never-ending craving for fun.

The Announcement

Nick Phillips announced in the January 7 newsletter: "There will be a club meeting on Saturday, January 11 at 4:00 PM. The Winter 2003 Presidential Election must take place! There will also be one on Saturday, January 25, at 1:00."

Scholarly controversy around these events

The January 11 meeting most likely took place, while the January 25 meeting did not.

However, because of the 2003 Newsletter Hiatus, there is some uncertainty surrounding the timeline of political events of this period. The results of the meeting were not printed in the newsletter because there was not one. All we know is that between the January 7 and August 27 newsletters, Theodore Phillips had become president.

The list of presidents, compiled for the first time in early 2004 by Pegasus and Niki Moto at the commissioning of President Loser, lists Theodore Phillips as the 8th president between January 11, 2003 and September 14, 2003. Support for this view lies in the fact that we know there had been an election scheduled for that date.

Another primary source document, History, says that Ted Phillips became the 8th president during April 2003. This section of the document, according to forensic analysis, was likely written during summer 2003, so it had only been a short time after the event described. However, the scribe was writing from memory and not referring to any other written primary source records. Also, the scribe did not include an exact date.

Result

Whenever it happened, in 2003, Theodore Phillips became the 8th president of the club.
