History
Gaia the Dragon Champion is consistently summoned using Polymerization throughout the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime from a Fusion Deck. It does not fit the historical Free United Club of Kids's typical methodology to reclassify other Fusion monsters as normal monsters, since Gaia is an obvious combination of its Fusion Materials. However, in the early days of the LOB booster pack release, members of the historical Free United Club of Kids played by a custom ruleset, due to limited availability of booster packs during Spring 2002, and these rules were only partially phased out in the weeks prior to the finals of their first Duel Monsters tournament, which is covered by the first season of Ni-Ki-Oh!
In Ni-Ki-Oh! season 1 episode 9, By the Other's Paw, Tommy summons Gaia the Dragon Champion from his hand without using Polymerization and without explanation. However, at the time, he has no monsters on his side of the field, while Niki and Joey have several.
