Peace in Candy Land

This page is a chapter in Candy Land Dies
CANDY LAND was a beautiful place. All the trees were green and the flowers in bloom. Everything was great now that evil Lord Licorice had been kicked out and left in a valley never before discovered, far from the boundaries of Candy Land and everywhere else, so he wouldn't cause any more trouble.

Now that Lord Licorice was gone, everything's spick-and-span; the sugar plums were ripe and ready for picking; the candy canes were dark red and pure white and especially tall this year; the gumdrops were very plump, good, sparkly, and at their juiciest; the nuts were all very crunchy and flavorish and tasty; the lollipops were bright red and blue; the ice cream was ice cold and very yummy; and the molasses was as chocolaty as ever. Everything was perfect. It was the best summer Candy Land had ever had.

There was more candy in bloom that there ever was in Candy Land history. There was so much candy in bloom that King Candy had to send for more people to harvest it. So much candy grew this year that there was twice as much as last year. Candy Land seemed to be getting bigger each day.

By the time a week had passed there was hardly enough room to walk through Candy Land's walkways. They were full of plants.

The harvesters had to work faster than usual to keep the candies from getting too large. Finally, they cut the plants back to their original sizes. All of the candies were harvested, and with this much candy, there was hardly any reason to harvest next year's batch, but it had to be done or the same thing that happened this year would happen again, only worse.

Soon the king found out that too, too much candy had been harvested, so everyone had to eat at least half of it before giving it away, because they didn't have enough boats to deliver that much candy.

These boats could carry an amount of up to 1,000 pounds of candy. These boats went to different countries each with a different candy. Northland, Outland, Cheesica, North Hilleria, and South Hilleria are the only places Candy Land delivers to.

They never delivered to places like Fallera, Bact, or Dark Island because they were always at war. Crystalia and Spika were risky countries. Every time you turned around there was some danger just ahead, and besides, they were too far away. Cresentia and Splitopia weren't too bad, but they're too hard to get to -- too many rapids and waterfalls and sharks. The Taco and Burrito Deserts were hardly any problem at all -- no rapids or anything -- and they're right by Candy Land. The only thing was -- it's too hot. The candy would melt before it got there, and the temperature could make a man die. It got no lower than 157 degrees Fahrenheit. Only dragons lived there at that temperature, and the dragons especially lived in the Dragon Valley, Taco Desert. Here the temperature rose to 193 degrees Fahrenheit. The Fajita Desert only got to about 120 to 146 degrees. Rivera and Dinneria had too many cannibals inhabiting them.

Licorice Land's where Lord Licorice now lived. There were two reasons why no one delivered there: 1) Lord Licorice once betrayed Candy Land's king, and 2) He was a big troublemaker: he tried to mess up Candy Land's harvest a few times, he tried killing one of Candy Land's kings once or twice, and he tricked people into doing horrible things like killing some of Candy Land's other kings and harvesters.

The boats which I have told you about had once delivered to everywhere on the map (this was before Lord Licorice had been kicked out of Candy Land). This was in 1759. It took about seven weeks before anyone got back from delivering. There were a lot of deliveries before this time, but never before did they take the risk of going any further than the tip of the Northland River.

Only the people delivering to Outland, North and South Hilleria, Northland, Cheesica and its four islands America, Swiss, Cottage, and Provolone, and the country of Tasteria came back.

"Maybe they didn't come back yet," said some of the deliverers to the king, King Maltballs. King Maltballs decided to wait a while longer for them. Soon a year passed, and no one came back and entered the gates of Candy Land, except salesmen and burglars and other people that might come to your front door. The other deliverers never returned.

And that's why the deliverers only delivered to Northland, Outland, North and South Hilleria, Cheesica, and Tasteria.

...

For some reason the plants that grew the candy that was harvested this year had had a formula sprayed on it that makes things grow. This formula could make things grow and make things change. Soon the changing part of this formula might take effect. The changing part could make good people obnoxious and mean, beautiful things ugly, the places in the world that were beautiful and good-weathered go on fire and die out, or have other horrible things happening to them. But that should happen in about two weeks -- not a very big concern right now. In fact, nobody even knew about it -- nobody but the evil Lord Licorice. This was all part of his evil plan. But don't worry about that now. Everything's fine. None of this was happening right now. None of this was happening for a while.

...

Everything's just perfect in Candy Land now; everyone's just tidying up after the strange growth of the candy. The walkways and paths were being swept up and everything was just right when one of the candy buds formed a weird looking plant -- it looked sort of like a Venus flytrap. Inside was a blob of something growing. One of the harvesters thought it was gross and mowed over it with one of the mowers' lawn mowers. Everyone else did the same.

Everything was normal again, better than usual. The king decided to give everyone the week off.

The Sugar Plum Trolls played Plumball, a game much like soccer only you kick a plum around. (You must understand that the people in Candy Land are only up to your thigh). Gramma Nutt decided to knit nut shreads into socks for her grandchildren, Ed Nutt and Crazy Nutt. Everyone else did whatever he pleased.

...
